Whether you rent or own your home, you will have accepted that cleaning is a part of life and, just like the dishes, your carpet needs a little TLC to keep it looking it’s best.

As with most things in life, regular maintenance is going to get you further than waiting for things to get messy before tending to them.

Maintenance Guide for any Carpet Variety

As a universal rule for all types of carpet, be sure to vacuum often to remove any loose bits of debris and soil that can become ground into your carpet. If you do happen to spill any liquids or solids on your carpet, remove them immediately before they can stain. Be sure to blot, never rub or scrub the spill and always work from the edge to the middle to avoid spreading.

It is also worth getting your carpet professionally cleaned once or twice a year – or hiring a steam cleaner and doing it yourself.

We know that not all carpets are created equally; each can require their own unique upkeep. To make it easier for you, here is a simple guide on the best maintenance for your particular carpet variety.

Maintenance for Corn Carpet

Thanks to its natural stain resistance, Corn Fibre Carpet can typically be cleaned with cold water. Be sure to pick up spills immediately, paying attention to the advice above; never rub or scrub, always blot the area and make sure to go from the outside toward the middle to avoid spreading.

Maintenance for Solution Dyed Nylon

As a highly durable carpet, Solution Dyed Nylon can withstand harsher cleaning products, making it an easy carpet to maintain. While SDN is able to withstand harsher cleaning products, it is always recommended to pre-test any cleaning solutions on a small area of your carpet, in an out of sight place, to ensure they do not affect the appearance or colour of the carpet. Always dry the area thoroughly after removing any spills. If the cleaned area is not sufficiently rinsed, a sticky detergent residue can remain, which will attract soiling.

Maintenance for Carpet Tiles

Like Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN), Carpet Tiles can withstand harsher products. The longer the spillage is left on the carpet, the more difficult it will be to remove. Again, be sure to pre-test your cleaning solution to avoid discolouration. In the event of any permanent damage occurring, Carpet Tiles are easy to remove and replace, making them perfect for commercial use.

Maintenance for Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a hard-wearing, easy-cleaning and highly stain resistant carpet. If you do experience spills, you can use a small amount of liquid detergent with cold water for immediate spot cleaning. Always remove soapy residue after cleaning, as this will attract more dirt.

Maintenance for Nylon

Nylon carpets are very stain resistant and can be cleaned with most cleaning solutions. Cleansers with a high alkaline content may cause a nylon carpet to lose its ability to resist stains. Home remedies such as dish detergent and water, white vinegar and water, lemon juice and club soda can help lift stains from nylon carpet fibres.
